On a recent Saturday morning, Gonzalez laced up her black and orange Nikes and headed out into the Belmont Heights area of Long Beach for a door-knocking mission that would cover nearly 3 1/2 miles and take her to more than 100 front porches.

Walking neighborhoods has been a weekend routine for the Long Beach city councilwoman since she began campaigning last December to represent the 33rd state Senate district. But it’s more urgent as the June 4 election nears and Gonzalez works to remind potential supporters to mail in ballots for her.

Gonzalez was first elected to her Long Beach Council seat in June 2014 and re-elected in 2018. Gonzalez said she supports “California values that are progressive and inclusive,” and stood up for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal, the state’s recently enacted gas tax and immigrant “sanctuary” laws. She proposed an activist government agenda to protect the environment, promote public schools, hold down rent and make health care available to everybody “whether documented or not.”
